How to switch Ubuntu to Xorg from Wayland

This quick tutorial shows you how to switch between Xorg and Wayland display servers on Ubuntu. While visually there’s no difference, Wayland is newer and may cause compatibility issues with some applications. Fortunately, you can switch between them easily depending on your needs.

Step-by-step Instructions

Restart your Ubuntu system. At the login screen, below the password field, click on the gear icon. You’ll see two options appear:

Ubuntu login screen options
  • Ubuntu: Uses the default Wayland display server
  • Ubuntu on Xorg: Switches to the Xorg display server

Select Ubuntu on Xorg from the list and then log in.

All set! You are now running Ubuntu with Xorg.
